Todd Howard, director and CEO of Bethesda Softworks Studios, talks about the priorities for making Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield.
It has been more than 10 years that we have not seen the release of a new game from The Elder Scrolls series. The series’ director, Todd Howard, is aware of this, but the reason for this long break in Starfield is the unrepeatable opportunity around the work.
In a lengthy interview with IGN Unfiltered on the 10th anniversary of Skyrim, Howard talked about the long list of projects that, after the fall of Fallout 4 in 2015, delayed the sixth release of The Elder Scrolls. He said about this:
Do you plan to have such a long gap between Skyrim and its sequel? I can not say this is the right decision. Do I wish I had a magic wand and the game we wanted was offered at once? one hundred percent.
However, many high-priority projects were built, including Fallout 76. What if their priority was The Elder Scrolls 6, then perhaps the current team would no longer have the opportunity to build new projects.
Howard went on to say:
We wanted to make a game like Starfield. For a long time we wanted to develop a different game and a new world. So when I started developing the game, right after the Fallout 4 development process was completed in 2015, I said to myself, if we don’t do it now, then when will it be time? I had a feeling that if we did not start this project now, there would be no chance for it.
Bethesda eventually decided to get into the Starfield process and put The Elder Scrolls 6 in the background. At E3 2018, we saw the unveiling of both games. Although Starfield is scheduled for release later next year, The Elder Scrolls 6 is still in pre-production. According to Bethesda’s usual plans, we are probably a few years away from the release of this work.

In the interview, limited information was shared about Elder Scrolls 6, which has been in the design phase since last June. We know that both this title and Starfield use the enhanced Creation Engine graphics engine. According to Howard, this will be a big improvement. Asked what he prefers to change in Skyrim, Todd Howard also talked about the path of the next version:
[در Skyrim] There are many things that we did not go into in depth, which in terms of interaction include only one veneer-like layer. When we think of games, the goal is always how deep do we design the various mechanics? Another issue is artificial intelligence and the interaction of NPCs with the open game. In my opinion, we have a long way to go to improve and excel these features.
Starfield will be released on Xbox X / S and PC . Xbox Game subscribers will have access to this game at the time of release.
