Two new patents have been filed by Nintendo, which show the company’s potential plans to use AI upscaling technology.
Nintendo’s two new inventions, first patented in March 2020 and officially unveiled this Thursday, show that Nintendo intends to use new systems and methods to enhance image quality using Machine Learning.
In fact, the process starts with taking a typical image as a source and then increasing the quality of the images by dividing it into identical pixel blocks and making changes to each one. All of this is then added to the activation matrix, which uses a precision grid to provide the full image at a much higher resolution.
For example, a game can be played with a certain resolution while the device is connected to the battery, but when the device is connected to a power outlet or TV, the output can be increased to a higher quality or 1080p resolution.
This system can also be used in cloud-based technologies (Cloud Systems). For example, in cloud systems, a compressed, low-resolution image can be sent to the player, and then using artificial intelligence to increase its quality to 1080p and provide the final result on the user’s device.
Nintendo has also introduced a new diagram of this patent, which shows that a 540p image can be well upgraded to a 1080p image. However, it has been confirmed that this is not the whole story, and the technology can even be used to improve image quality up to 4K resolution.
It should be noted that Bloomberg Media (BloombergClaims that a new Nintendo Switch with 4K image capability is under development and will be released in late 2022. Of course, this news has not been confirmed by Nintendo yet, and we will have to wait until then.
Also, a report was released earlier this year that Nintendo was expected to introduce a new Switch Pro model with 4K resolution support. Instead, the company introduced the Nintendo Switch OLED model in July, which includes a larger 7-inch OLED display but no 4K support.
